Story

One day, Nanba Masato, a young man who is aspiring to be a writer, feels excruciating pain in his abdomen and is rushed to a hospital in Kanto. A surgeon Okouchi Yoko diagnoses him with acute appendicitis and smiles as she gently cups his face with her hands. Beautiful like a goddess, she eases his hellish pain. The surgery is a success and Masato is delighted that Yoko is his attending physician. However, this is the opening to great despair and doom. Yoko is sociable and cheerful and also treats patients kindly. But her true face is something that she cannot even personally understand. Apathetic to all events from a young age, she is impassive and immoral. She has no compassion when she sees people who are suffering and also no feelings of guilt. When targeted people or events materialise, her dark side will kick in on impulse. One night, Masato finds a memo paper at the back of a drawer while tidying his hospital room. Hospital ward numbers and patient names are written on it in bad handwriting. Feeling curious about it, Masato asks the hospital’s cleaner Haga Meizen, whom he hit it off with after a random incident, to look into the information. He learns that the patients listed on the paper are all dead and has a bad feeling about this. Meanwhile, Yoko is badgered by a junior into attending a party and meets Otsuka Hikaru, the scion of a large hotel chain, there. He instantly falls for her and quickly makes advances. The condition of a bedridden old woman whom Yoko is in charge of changes and she needs new treatment. Yoko kindly tells her daughter Kobayashi Terumi with a smile that she will do whatever she can to help her when Terumi worries about the cost of treatment in addition to the cost of hospitalisation. But when Terumi is not there, Yoko coldly looks down at the sleeping old woman from her bedside and asks, “Your daughter has difficulty with money … what should we do?” Yoko then visits the confessional at a church nearby and talks to the priest about the story of a devil that she has an interest in. “She thinks nothing of hurting a person and can no longer control the impulse to do evil.” The priest advices her that she will be given salvation if she can do good things for people. After hearing these words, Yoko heads to the hospital ward of the bedridden old woman…

Tanaka Rena as Okouchi Yoko

An excellent and beautiful surgeon. She has a good reputation because she is sociable, cheerful and also kind to patients. However, there is another side to her. She has lacked empathy and morals to all kinds of incidents since childhood. When targeted people or events materialise, her dark side will kick in on impulse. She was taught by her strict father that being helpful to people is the right thing and she chose to be a doctor. However, she thinks that her profession is her true vocation because she can now control patients the way she wants.

Nakamura Aoi as Nanba Masato

An aspiring novelist who continues to be a part-time teacher at a cram school because he has not gained popularity. He has a deep knowledge of novels and is inquisitive. Although he likes Okouchi Yoko who has become his attending physician after he was immediately admitted to the hospital, he soon starts to have misgivings about her and attempts to expose her misdeeds.

Shinohara Atsushi as Haga Meizen

A hospital cleaner who is shallow and has a lot of free time so he looks for people to talk to. He is familiar with what goes on inside the hospital, and together with Nanba Masato, tries to expose the baffling incidents happening at the hospital to satisfy his curiosity.
