Based on a manga written by Yumi Hotta and drawn by Takeshi Obata that appeared in Shonen Jump, Hikaru no Go ran for three years on Japanese television. Hikaru Shindo is a normal 6th grader of no great accomplishments–until he encounters the ghost of Sai of Fujiwara, an exquisite Go master who lived at the Heian court 1,000 years ago. Sai committed suicide after being falsely accused of cheating, but his love of Go keeps him attached to this world. In return for enabling Sai to play Go, Hikaru gains a sort of built-in tutor to help him with history and social studies. But after his first few games as Sai’s puppet, Hikaru becomes fascinated by the intensity of the players; he wants to learn to play on his own. Hikaru’s new interest and preoccupied manner puzzle his friend Akari and his teacher, and earn him two foes: the icy prodigy Akira Toya and the rude Tetsuo Kaga.

DVD features the first part of a film “Solomon’s Perjury (Solomon no Gisho)” based on the bestselling novel by Miyuki Miyabe. Plot: On Christmas morning, a high school junior Takuya Kashiwagi falls from the top of a school building. The police announce the boy’s death as a suicide, but an anonymous note claims that the sender was a witness during the Kashiwagi’s death and he was killed by a group of troubled students led by Shunji Oide. The school and the police ignore this note, but it is leaked to the press, and the situation then becomes uncontrollable. On the other hand, a leader of the class the boy belonged, Ryoko Fujino who think adults are not reliable to solve the situation, bring up the idea of convening a court in the school…

However, rumours quickly spread about the boy’s death and an anonymous note is received by the police that claims the sender was a witness during the boy’s death. The note also claims the boy was killed by three troubled students at the school.

The lives of three young working-class male friends are followed in the film. Chun-shik works at a barbershop where he is in love with Miss Yu, a co-worker. Gil-nam, a hotel worker, is in love with Jin-ok, who works at a hair salon. Duk-bae, the most innocent of the trio, works at a Chinese restaurant and is torn between his affections for a factory-worker and Myung-hi, a wealthy girl. Together over drinks, the three young men talk over their lives and their aimless thoughts about the future. At the end of the film they are separated when Chun-shik is arrested for assault, and Gil-nam leaves to begin his military service.

A newlywed wife, Ji-sun moves to her husband’s village in a rural area called Sambatgol where it is customary to have glossy charades, incompetence is prolific, and thus poverty is endemic. She starts to endeavor to break down all these vices. Her family and neighbors point accusing fingers at her first, but soon they are influenced by her to combine forces with her. In the meantime, longtime absent father of Gang-du returns to hids wife, who is Ji-sun’s strong supporter and the chairperson of the village women’s association. Gang-du’s father, however, turns out to be an espionage agent sent from North Korea. He makes his mind up to denounce himself by persuasion of his wife, but he and his wife get killed by other espionage agents. At the funeral of these two, Ji-sun and the village people march in resolution of succeeding her will to make more endeavors in the developmental plan of the village.

Fukusaku’s 6th film, starring Koji Tsuruta, Tetsurô Tanba & a very young Tatsuo Umemiya (as well as the leading actresses of Toei Tokyo Studio such as Hitomi Nakahara)

Pretty much all the stylistic trademarks of his later realistic yakuza films are here: juxtaposition of still images, canted angle, handheld camera, even the atom bomb explosion in the opening of BWHOH series has counterpart here.
